Light Echoes from V838 Mon

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

What caused this outburst of V838 Mon? For unknown reasons, the outer surface of star V838 Mon suddenly expanded, making it the brightest star in the Milky Way in January 2002. Then, just as suddenly, it faded. A stellar flash like this has never been seen before; supernovas and novas expel matter into space. Although the V838 Mon flash appears to expel material, what is seen in this Hubble Space Telescope image is actually a light echo reflecting off surrounding dust.
