NGC 6334: The Cat's Paw Nebula

COSMIC MESSAGE

The Cat's Paw Nebula, NGC 6334, is an emission nebula in Scorpius, about 5,500 light-years away. Its red color comes from an abundance of ionized hydrogen atoms. Stars nearly ten times the mass of our Sun have been born here in the past few million years. It is also known as the Bear Claw Nebula for its distinctive shape.
