The Phoenix Lander, which arrived on Mars two weeks prior, is preparing to analyze a soil sample. This image shows the dirt-filled scoop approaching one of the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer's (TEGA) eight ovens. Inside, the soil will be baked, and emitted gases will be categorized by a mass spectrometer. Scientists hope to discover what surprises are hidden within the Martian soil, particularly any light-colored material that might be ice.
