Galaxies on a String

NASA APOD · Warren Keller
COSMIC MESSAGE

Galaxies NGC 5216 and NGC 5218 are connected by a cosmic trail of gas, dust, and stars, about 22,000 light-years long. This interacting galaxy pair, also known as Keenan's system or Arp 104, is about 17 million light-years away in Ursa Major. The debris trail, NGC 5218's comma shape, and NGC 5216's distorted arms are all a result of their mutual gravitational pull.
