Great Orion Nebulae

NASA APOD · Tony Hallas
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Great Nebula in Orion, also known as M42, is a famous star-forming region. Its glowing gas clouds and hot young stars are on the right in this two-frame mosaic. The mosaic also includes the smaller M43 near the center, and the dusty, bluish reflection nebulae NGC 1977 on the left. These nebulae are at the edge of a giant molecular cloud complex, about 1,500 light-years away.
