Comet Halley's Nucleus: An Orbiting Iceberg

NASA APOD · Halley Multicolor Camera Team, Giotto Project, ESA
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Halley's nucleus, photographed by the Giotto spacecraft in 1986, looks like a very dirty iceberg. Before Giotto, ground-based telescopes could only resolve the comet's coma, the cloud of gas and dust surrounding the nucleus, and its characteristic tails. Giotto was one of the first spacecraft to photograph a comet nucleus.
