Cassini Spacecraft Crosses Saturn's Ring Plane

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

When Galileo first observed Saturn in 1612, he saw its rings disappear. He didn't understand why, but we now know it's because the rings are incredibly thin. When Earth crosses Saturn's ring plane, the rings appear to vanish. This image from the Cassini spacecraft shows a similar event, captured as the probe crossed Saturn's ring plane.
