Diamond Ring and Shadow Bands
NASA APOD · Stephen Schneider
COSMIC MESSAGE
As a total solar eclipse ended, sunlight streamed past the Moon's edge, creating a 'diamond ring' effect. Seen through thin clouds from Hao, French Polynesia, it also produced remarkable shadow bands. These flickering bands, projected onto the cloud layer, are parallel to the emerging sliver of sunlight and are caused by turbulence in Earth's atmosphere.
