Galaxies in the River

NASA APOD · Martin Pugh
COSMIC MESSAGE

Large galaxies often absorb smaller ones, a process called galactic cannibalism. Our own Milky Way does this, and so do the galaxies in this image from Eridanus. The large spiral NGC 1532 is locked in a gravitational struggle with a dwarf galaxy, over 50 million light-years away.
