Sunset at the Spiral Jetty
NASA APOD · Arne Erisoty
COSMIC MESSAGE
These broad, dark bands are shadows cast by clouds near the western horizon, seen at sunset from Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty. Sunlight, known as crepuscular rays, outlines them as the sun dips below the clouds. Though the shadows are parallel, they appear to converge in the distance due to perspective. This striking optical effect occurs in the twilight sky.
