COSMIC MESSAGE
IC 1396, also known as the Elephant's Trunk Nebula, is a star-forming region where gas and dust clouds appear to take on various forms. The only real "monster" here is a bright young star whose energetic light is eroding the dust of a dark cometary globule. Jets and winds of particles from this star are also shaping the nebula. This region is a birthplace for new stars.
