The Cat's Eye Nebula from Hubble

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Cat's Eye Nebula, NGC 6543, is a planetary nebula three thousand light-years away. This Hubble image shows the final, brief phase in the life of a sun-like star. The dying central star shed its outer layers in a series of convulsions, creating the concentric shells. The complex inner structures are still a subject of study.
