NASA's Helios aircraft flew almost a century after the Wright brothers' first flight. This solar-powered ultralight, with its 247-foot wing covered in solar cells, flew at 3,000 meters over Kauai, Hawaii. Helios, seen here in August 2001, traveled at about 40 kilometers per hour, powered by 14 electric motors.
