Sunspot Castle

COSMIC MESSAGE

Sunspots on the setting Sun created a dramatic view from a medieval castle in this November 2011 photo. Active Region 1339, larger than Jupiter, was near the Sun's center and responsible for a powerful X-class flare earlier that month. When the Sun is dimmed by the atmosphere at sunset, these enormous active regions become visible to the naked eye. This daily event offers a unique perspective on our star.
