Blue Straggler Stars in Globular Cluster M53

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

M53, also known as NGC 5024, is one of about 250 globular clusters in our galaxy. Most of its stars are older and redder than our Sun. However, some enigmatic stars appear bluer and younger, known as blue stragglers. These stars are unusually common in M53 and challenge the idea that all stars in a globular cluster form at the same time. This image highlights their distinct color.
