Messier 106, a spiral galaxy about 21 million light-years away, is seen here in the constellation Canes Venatici. It spans about 30,000 light-years across. This "island universe" was discovered in 1781 by Pierre Mechain and later added to Charles Messier's catalog. Its bright central region is a hallmark of this type of galaxy.
