Introducing Comet ISON
NASA APOD · Ligustri Rolando
COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet ISON, officially designated C/2012 S1, was a newly discovered comet that held the potential to become exceptionally bright. While it was possible the comet could break up or brighten modestly, optimistic speculation suggested it might develop a spectacular tail. There was even a chance it could approach the brightness of the full Moon by late 2013. At the time of its discovery, Comet ISON was very faint but visible at magnitude 18.
