COSMIC MESSAGE
Abell 39 is a planetary nebula, a remarkably simple and spherical shell of gas about five light-years across. It was formed when a sun-like star expelled its outer atmosphere over thousands of years. The central star, now evolving into a hot white dwarf, is still visible. This ghostly sphere lies about 7,000 light-years away in the constellation Hercules.
