GRAIL Maps the Moon's Gravity

NASA APOD · NASA, JPL-Caltech, MIT, GSFC, SVS
COSMIC MESSAGE

To understand the Moon's formation, NASA launched the twin GRAIL satellites in 2011 to map its surface gravity in detail. This image shows a resulting GRAIL gravity map, with blue indicating slightly lighter gravity and red indicating stronger gravity. Analysis of this data suggests the Moon has an unexpectedly shallow crust, about 40 kilometers deep, and a unique overall composition.
