NGC 2736: The Pencil Nebula

NASA APOD · Martin Pugh
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Pencil Nebula, NGC 2736, is a small part of the much larger Vela supernova remnant. This long, thin structure is a shock wave plowing through space at immense speed. It is about five light-years long and 800 light-years away. The glowing filaments are interstellar gas heated by the shock from the stellar explosion.
