Airglow, Gegenschein, and Milky Way

COSMIC MESSAGE
This mosaic of images from Las Campanas Observatory in Chile shows an unusually intense green airglow above thin clouds. Airglow is light produced by chemical reactions in the atmosphere, found all over the globe. Unlike aurorae, which are caused by energetic charged particles, airglow is due to chemiluminescence. The image also captures the Milky Way and the gegenschein, a faint brightening of the night sky in the antisolar direction.
