Unraveling NGC 3169

NASA APOD · Adam Block
COSMIC MESSAGE

Spiral galaxy NGC 3169, about 70 million light-years away in Sextans, appears to be unraveling. Its spiral arms are distorted into sweeping tidal tails. This is due to gravitational interactions with its neighbor, NGC 3166. Such interactions are a common fate for galaxies in the local universe.
