Tails of Comet Lemmon

NASA APOD · Gerald Rhemann
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Lemmon displayed intricate tails earlier this year. Like most comets nearing the Sun, it had two: a dust tail and an ion tail. The off-white dust tail, visible around the nucleus, is formed by sunlight reflecting off dust shed by the comet. The blue, sculptured ion tail is created by the solar wind pushing ions expelled from the nucleus.
