The Colliding Spiral Galaxies of Arp 271

NASA APOD · Gemini Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE

These two spiral galaxies, NGC 5426 and NGC 5427, are in the process of colliding. They are similar in size, each with sprawling arms and a compact core. Over the next tens of millions of years, they will pass through each other. While their stars are unlikely to collide directly, the gravitational interaction will trigger new star formation.
