The Local Fluff
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The space between stars is not empty, but filled with gas called the interstellar medium. Near our Sun, this gas is very tenuous, so we call it the Local Fluff. It's mostly hydrogen and absorbs specific colors of light from nearby stars. Astronomers use this absorption to map the Local Fluff within 20 light-years of us.
