Light Pillars over Finland

NASA APOD · Thomas Kast
COSMIC MESSAGE

Light pillars, not aurora, are seen behind houses in Finland. This local phenomenon occurs when flat, fluttering ice crystals near the ground reflect light upwards. Usually, these ice crystals evaporate higher in the atmosphere, causing sun pillars, but in freezing temperatures, they form closer to Earth.
