A Rainbow Pileus Cloud over Zimbabwe

NASA APOD · Peter Lowenstein
COSMIC MESSAGE

A pileus cloud, typically seen above a darker cloud, can sometimes appear iridescent. This phenomenon occurs when water droplets in the cloud are uniformly sized, causing them to diffract different colors of sunlight by varying amounts. This particular iridescent pileus cloud was photographed just before sunset in Zimbabwe, with unusual cloud ripples visible above it.
