Tonight, Mars is between opposition and its closest approach, looping through the constellation Virgo opposite the Sun. This is prime season for telescopic views of the Red Planet, like this image from April 3rd. Captured with a high-speed digital camera and a 16-inch telescope from Brazil, it shows Mars' north polar cap at the top left. Whitish orographic clouds, formed from water vapor, are also visible.
