Valles Marineris, the largest canyon in the Solar System, cuts across Mars. It is over 3,000 kilometers long, up to 600 kilometers wide, and as much as 8 kilometers deep. For comparison, Earth's Grand Canyon is 800 kilometers long, 30 kilometers across, and 1.8 kilometers deep. The origin of Valles Marineris is still unknown, though it may have started as a crack billions of years ago.
