The Day After Mars
NASA APOD · CARA Project
COSMIC MESSAGE
October 20, 2014, was a calm day on Mars, the day after its close encounter with Comet Siding Spring. The comet passed within 86,700 miles of Mars, about one-third the Earth-Moon distance. Earth's spacecraft and rovers in Mars orbit observed the event, providing valuable data. Unlike the fictional Martian invasion of 1938, this encounter was real and observed by our robotic explorers.
