A Dust Devil on Mars

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured this image of a dust devil on Mars in 2012. It was late in the northern Martian spring. The core of this dust devil is about 140 meters in diameter, and its plume reaches about 20 kilometers above the surface. Dust devils are common in Mars's Amazonis Planitia region, forming as the Sun heats the surface and generates rising air.
