Aurora over Icelandic Glacier

Several conditions aligned to create this award-winning shot over Iceland's Vatnajökull Glacier. A dark night, few clouds, an epic auroral display, and calm, unfrozen water in the Jökulsárlón Iceberg Lagoon contributed to the scene. The aurora-filled skies are common near Earth's poles as our Sun approaches solar maximum. This particular display occurred in January, a year before the image was published in 2015.
