An Unexpected Aurora over Norway

NASA APOD · Tommy Richardsen
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sometimes, the sky lights up unexpectedly. This image captures a sudden, spectacular aurora over Steinsvik, Norway, in February 2014. The photographer had been packing up, disappointed by a quiet night, when the display began. Auroras are caused by solar particles interacting with Earth's atmosphere.
