The Trifid Nebula, Messier 20, usually appears divided into three parts by dark dust lanes. But in this infrared image from the Spitzer Space Telescope, those lanes glow. The infrared light lets us see through the dust, revealing filaments of gas and newborn stars. This star-forming region sits in Sagittarius, about 5,000 light-years from Earth.
