NASA APOD · Damian Peach/SEN
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 1316 is a massive elliptical galaxy that appears to be devouring a smaller spiral galaxy neighbor, NGC 1317. This image shows dark dust lanes, characteristic of a spiral galaxy, and faint swirls of stars and gas. These features are evidence of a galactic collision that began about 100 million years ago.
