SN Refsdal: The First Predicted Supernova Image

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

SN Refsdal is the first predicted supernova image, appearing multiple times due to a cosmic lens. The supernova itself occurred only once, far behind the galaxy cluster MACS J1149.5+2223. The cluster's gravity acted as a lens, splitting the supernova's light into several bright images. This allowed astronomers to predict when it would reappear.
