Ripples Through a Dark Sky

Noctilucent clouds, also known as polar mesospheric clouds, ripple through the sky in this Swedish summer midnight image. These night-shining clouds form at high latitudes when water vapor is driven into the cold upper atmosphere. Fine dust from meteors or volcanic ash provides surfaces for ice crystal formation.
