Great Rift Near the Center of the Milky Way

This mosaic of over 100 telescopic images spans about 50 degrees across the night sky. It follows the Great Rift, a dark river of dust and molecular gas that stretches along the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy. Starting at the top center, you can trace the galactic equator through constellations like Aquila, Serpens Cauda, and Scutum. At the bottom lies Sagittarius, near the center of the Milky Way, with many obscuring dark nebulae visible along the path.
