Apollo 11: Catching Some Sun
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong captured this image of the lunar surface. It shows the mission's lunar module, the Eagle, and Buzz Aldrin deploying the Solar Wind Composition Experiment. This long sheet of foil, exposed to the Sun, trapped particles from the solar wind. This allowed for a sample of material from the Sun itself to be collected and brought back to Earth.
