The Cat's Eye Nebula, NGC 6543, lies three thousand light-years from Earth. This classic planetary nebula represents a brief, glorious phase in the life of a sun-like star. The dying central star may have created the simple, outer pattern of concentric shells by shedding its outer layers in a series of regular convulsions. The Hubble Space Telescope reveals the more complex inner structures.
