In 2001, Mars underwent a massive, planet-wide dust storm. These two images from the Hubble Space Telescope show the red planet before and during the storm. At left, small "seed" storms begin near the Hellas basin and the northern polar cap. The image on the right, taken two months later, shows the full extent of the dust.
