Phobos: Doomed Moon of Mars

Phobos is Mars's larger moon, a 25-kilometer asteroid-like object. This false-colored mosaic from the Viking 1 mission in 1978 shows its cratered surface. Phobos and Deimos, Mars's two moons, are thought to be captured asteroids. This moon is slowly spiraling inward and is predicted to break up or crash into Mars in about 50 million years.
