AZURE Vapor Tracers over Norway

COSMIC MESSAGE

Last Friday, the sky over northern Norway displayed colorful clouds, dots, and plumes for about 30 minutes. These were created by NASA's Auroral Zone Upwelling Rocket Experiment, or AZURE. The experiment released gas tracers from two sounding rockets to study winds in Earth's upper atmosphere. The harmless gases, including trimethylaluminum and barium, glowed as they reacted with sunlight.
