First Horizon-Scale Image of a Black Hole
This is the first horizon-scale image of a black hole, taken by the Event Horizon Telescope. It shows the area around the black hole at the center of galaxy M87. The dark central region is the black hole's shadow, not its event horizon, which is smaller. The glowing gas around it is what we see.
