A Cosmic Rose: The Rosette Nebula in Monoceros

NASA APOD · Jean Dean
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Rosette Nebula, NGC 2237, is a famous stellar nursery about 5,000 light years away in Monoceros. Its flower-like shape is sculpted by winds and radiation from its central cluster of hot, young O-type stars. This cluster, NGC 2244, contains stars that are only a few million years old. The nebula's symmetric form makes it a striking example of a cosmic rose.
