COSMIC MESSAGE

Messier 106 is a large, bright spiral galaxy located about 23.5 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. Also known as NGC 4258, it spans about 80,000 light-years across. Its distance is well-known because astronomers can directly measure it by tracking the galaxy's water masers, which are naturally occurring microwave lasers. This cosmic vista looks toward M106, a dominant member of the Canes II galaxy group.
