A Mercury Transit Sequence

NASA APOD · Dominique Dierick
COSMIC MESSAGE

Mercury crosses the face of the Sun, an event called a transit, only about 13 times a century. This sequence shows the entire transit from May 7, 2003, as seen from Belgium. Mercury's orbit is not perfectly aligned with Earth's, so it usually passes above or below the Sun. This transit lasted over five hours.
