Astronaut Bruce McCandless II is pictured here, floating untethered in space about 100 meters from the space shuttle Challenger. He was the first person to experience such a free-flying spacewalk. McCandless used a Manned Maneuvering Unit, which propelled him with nitrogen gas jets, during Space Shuttle mission 41-B in 1984.
