NGC 2392: Double-Shelled Planetary Nebula
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Astronomer William Herschel discovered this planetary nebula, NGC 2392, in 1787. It looks like a person's head surrounded by a parka hood. The nebula is a double-shelled structure, with the outer gas layers ejected from a dying Sun-like star about 10,000 years ago. The gas clouds are so complex that scientists are still working to understand them. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
