Filaments of the Cygnus Loop

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

These delicate ribbons of shocked interstellar gas are part of a blast wave from a supernova. The explosion would have been easily visible to humans around 20,000 years ago. The Hubble Space Telescope captured this close-up of the outer edge of the Cygnus Loop, also known as the Veil Nebula. The filamentary shock front is still expanding, pushing through the surrounding interstellar gas.
